FALL 2019
Loose Leaf Class
Room 100
The Loose Leaf class will read Elaine Pagels', Why Religion? A Personal Story (2018). Pagels is a leading scholar of early Christianity and has won both a National Book Award and a National Book Critics Circle Award. She is currently the Harrington Spear Paine Foundation Professor of Religion at Princeton University. This autobio-graphical work deals with her own struggle to understand Christianity and religion more broadly, and it also focuses on how humans deal with tragedy and catastrophe. Ultimately, as the title suggests, it deals with why we cling to religion. Read more about Pagels at: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Elaine-Pagels

Seekers Class
Church Parlor
Seekers encourage open discussion as they “seek” understanding, knowledge and fellowship while studying together. The class will begin with John Ortberg’s Eternity is Now in Session—a radical rediscovery of what Jesus really taught about salvation, eternity, and getting to the GOOD place. For Christians, perhaps the deepest expression of what we're waiting for is found in the phrase “eternal life.” But what is eternal life? Why do we want it? And how do we know if we have it? This class shares, studies, prays, socializes, and cares for each other and others.

The Word Class
Room 303
The Word Class incorporates Christian-authored books and accompanying videos in studying God's word and it's applicability in our daily lives. The class is studying the DVD series The Story: The Bible as One Continuous Story of God and His People. God goes to great lengths to rescue lost and hurting people. That is what The Story is all about: the story of the Bible, God’s great love affair with humanity. Then, Simon Peter by pastor and author Adam Hamilton, will take the class on a six-week journey that looks into the life, faith and character of Simon Peter. All are welcome as we pray, play, learn, work and care for one another. Class members enjoy lively open dialogues and gain from learning and studying together.
Glenn Mathews is the teacher.
